Social Studies

Hi there!

The Social Studies section is grouped with the English section of the first exam. This component is all multiple choice. But remember you have 60 minutes for 60 Multiple choice questions!!!! In this part of the exam, there are questions about Canadian Government, Socialism vs. Capitalism vs. Mutualism, types of government, Charter of Rights and Freedom, law, and important events in history. For Canadian Government, they ask questions like about what type of government Canada is, Senate Seats per province, who supports proportional representation (liberal thinkers vs. Conservative thinkers), and senate reform. They ask a couple of questions about the differences between socialism, capitalism, and mutualism. I remember one of the questions was:
What type of government Canada is:

  1. Democracy
  2. Dictatorship
  3. Republic
  4. Communist State
They also asked what type of democracy we are. For the charter questions, they asked about the freedom of religion, speech, and opinion. They also gave some sources where people committed crimes and asked what type of court they would go to. They also had some comics showing slavery and a bunch of people trying to justify slave trade. They also gave a list of events and asked for the chronological order of them. Mine was:

What is the proper order of these:

  1. Canadian Confederation
  2. World War II
  3. The American Civil War
  4. The Cold War
Then they gave a list of a the possible order of these. That is about it for Social Studies.

English Language Arts

Hi there!

So the English component of the exam is all multiple choice and is all reading comprehension. In my exam, they gave a couple of short stories and some poems. What I would suggest is to first read the questions and try to answer line specific questions (for example, if the question asks for something in line 63, read line 60 - 64 then answer the question). Also only read the whole thing if you have to! Remember the exam is timed!!! You only get 60 minutes to answer 60 multiple choice questions from English AND Social Studies!!! Another thing to watch for in the English section is Literary Devices. You should know your basic Literary Devices such as Simile, Metaphor, Personification, Alliteration, Sentence Fragment, etc... You should also know the differences between these. I will make another post with the definitions of these. That is about it for the English section of the exam.

See ya,
RC

Introduction

Hi there!

I was a grade 9 student that took the Old Scona Academic entrance exam. Contrary to what many people say when you CAN NOT prepare for the exam, there actually is a way to prepare for the exam and it is more than just a good nights sleep. When I took the exam we were tested in English, Social Studies, Math, Science, and Logic/Critical thinking abilities. The next few posts are going to be a quick rundown of what could possibly be on your exam. I remember some specific examples but the rest are just general topics. In general, I would say brush up on your grade 7 and 8 stuff and you should even go through your grade 9 stuff.
Also please feel free to add topics from your exam if I missed any in the comments section!

See ya soon,
RC
